Da Vinci Robot Cause Controversy among Experts, Patients

September 10 2013, 16:11pm

Medical personnel have conducted a probe regarding the reports of death linked to a popular state-of-the-art surgical machine, da Vinci robot, say online sources. The robotic machine has been tediously advertised by its manufacturer, Intuitive Surgical, after it has gained approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000. Intuitive Surgical has received allegations that they fell short in informing the patients about da Vinci’s potential minor and major side effects. Punctured organs and death are some of the complications that raised concern among health experts.

Da Vinci is a very popular surgical machine used in the operating rooms in US hospitals. Hysterectomy and different cancer surgeries uses this kind of minimally invasive technique. Patient will have lesser risk of developing infection and rapid recuperation because robotic surgery only makes small incisions, unlike traditional surgeries.

The FDA is looking into the issue to determine whether the growing number of injuries reported is simply because more robotic surgeries are being done, or if they are being caused by the machine itself or by the surgeons, who, critics argue, may be given inadequate training.

Because of the problems caused by da Vinci, lawsuits have been filed against the company. Health experts recommend that before undergoing for a robotic surgery, a person needs to gather some information and consult their respective surgeons.
